Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for work
   • Workplace information, including materials application and safety information, and material safety data sheets (MSDS), is used to inform work practices
   • Characteristics of the surface and the required surface finish are identified from work orders or instructions
   • Processing and application techniques, time and safety requirements are identified and used for work planning
   • Work health and safety (WHS) requirements, including ventilation requirements and personal protection needs, are observed throughout the work
   • Tools, equipment and accessories are identified and checked for safe and effective operation for the surface finishing task
2. Prepare for application of materials
   • Surfaces are checked for contamination and correct preparation according to workplace procedures and standards
   • Products with surface or other faults are identified and faults repaired as appropriate
   • Finishing materials required are identified and prepared for the task
   • Trial applications of flat surface or furniture materials are made to check rubber operation, materials consistency and specified surface finish
   • Faults are identified and workplace procedures for rectification are followed
3. Apply soft varnish/rubber polish and/or varnish using soft rubber
   • Surface is lightly sanded and checked for defects which are rectified in accordance with workplace procedures
   • Rubber is suitably charged
   • Surface is soft-rubbered/varnish rubbered using correct amount of pressure and suitable rubber movements
   • Surface is inspected and any defects repaired/rectified
4. Clean work area and maintain equipment
   • Equipment used is cleaned and inspected for serviceable condition and stored appropriately
   • Unserviceable equipment is tagged, faults are identified and appropriate personnel are informed
   • Work area is cleaned and returned to approved condition
   • Workplace records are completed

Unit context includes:	WHS requirements, including legislation, building codes, material safety management systems, hazardous and dangerous goods codes, and local safe operating procedures or equivalent work is carried out in accordance with legislative obligations, environmental legislation, relevant health regulations, manual handling procedures and organisation insurance requirements work requires individuals to demonstrate some discretion, judgement and problem solving in the application of soft rubber techniques
Surfaces include:	solid timber manufactured board
Tools and equipment include:	brushes swooges soft rubbers of cotton-wool or wadding body wrapped in cotton cloth sanding blocks
Materials include:	polish methylated spirits spirit varnish scourer abrasive papers cotton rags steel wool
Personal protective equipment includes:	that prescribed under legislation, regulations and enterprise policies and practices
Information and procedures include:	workplace procedures relating to the use of tools and equipment work instructions, including job sheets, cutting lists, plans, drawings and designs workplace procedures relating to reporting and communication manufacturer specifications and operational procedures

Performance Evidence

Interpret work order and locate and apply relevant information

Apply safe handling requirements for equipment, products and materials, including use of personal protective equipment

Identify materials used in the work process

Follow work instructions, operating procedures and inspection processes to:

minimise the risk of injury to self or others

prevent damage to goods, equipment and products

maintain required production output and product quality

Accurately apply soft/varnish rubber techniques on a minimum of two (2) occasions which must cover a chair or equivalent, and a large flat surface

Maintain application equipment

Use mathematical ideas and techniques to correctly complete measurements, calculate area and estimate material requirements

Communicate ideas and information to enable confirmation of work requirements and specifications and the reporting of work outcomes and problems, interpret basic plans and follow safety procedures

Minimise wastage of resources, including materials, time and money

Work with others and in a team by recognising dependencies and using cooperative approaches to optimise work flow and productivity
